Get “in”to outer space at New York City’s third celebration of Yuri Gagarin’s historic flight. Party like it’s 2009 – in space!
On Saturday April 4, the New York producers of Yuri’s Night, an annual international celebration of human spaceflight, host their third space-themed gala aimed to inspire, inform, and provide a venue for a new generation to network about space exploration. The evening, hosted by New York chapter of the Space Tourism Society (STSNY) and sponsored by the Space Frontier Foundation, includes flight-themed live performances and video installations, space-themed action games, DJ, VJ, dancing, a midnight toast, and prizes for best costumes.
Yuri’s Night NY is the Saturday night highlight of a weekend-long celebration of flight at Galapagos Art Space on the DUMBO waterfront in Brooklyn. The Space Frontier Foundation (SFF) offers a door prize of free registration to the annual NewSpace conference, held this year at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, July 18 to July 20, 2009.”
Meet Megan Seals, Teachers in Space leader and 5th grade teacher, who recently flew with ZeroG, after being nominated by State Senator William C Wampler, Jr. [R-Bristol, VA.] to make the space training flight. Seals serves on the board of directors of the Space Frontier Foundation and has served on the SFF’s Teachers in Space team for five years. Enjoy a live spacetastic performance by My Robot Friend, who has appeared on Rolling Stone Magazine’s Hot List and has opened for luminaries such as the Scissor Sisters and Le Tigre.
Emcees Carol Pinchefsky, freelance writer and editor of Space Future.com, and Allan Piper, film and television director and writer of the upcoming animated film “Alien Band,” present an action-packed Space Trivia Survival game in which contestants scramble to land on the right planet for each question before the music stops and leaves them stranded in outer space. The Manhattan-based New York Jedi Stage Combat group will perform a Star Warstm style light-saber battle. The 15-minute performance features teams of costumed Jedi and Sith clashing glowing light sabers with whirling choreography on the main stage.
Retrofuture Products (retrofuture.com) presents a phantasmagoric light show of futuristic footage along with danceable space-age beats. Their sister company, Funkyfoodshop.com, will provide samples of tasty astro treats, such as freeze-dried ice cream and Space Food Sticks – the original out of this world delicious protein power snack.
For the duration of the event, guests will enjoy additional live performances, visit with special guests from the space industry, and dance to intergalactic mashup music by star DJs MIKO (Wanderlust) and Christopher Ford. At 1 am, STSNY will award prizes for the best space-themed or futuristic costumes.
Tickets are on sale at www.yurisnightny.net for the advance price of $16 and door price of $25. Guests must be 21 and over to attend.
Yuri’s Night NY is one in a series of space-themed events presented by the Space Tourism Society and the Space Frontier Foundation in support of Yuri’s Night, an annual worldwide space celebration. Yuri’s Night and related events provide a venue for a new generation to network, explore, and create plans for the future.
