February 12, 2001 Press Releases

Los Angeles, CA, February 12, 2001 – The Space Frontier Foundation is supporting ‘Yuri’s Night, The World Space Party’, a great event being organized by Lorretta Hidalgo and George Whitesides. They are throwing a party in Los Angeles to honor Yuri Gargarin, broadcasting it via the web, and linking to 18 other parties around the planet. For full information on the event, including all party locations, visit the official site, Yuri’s Night.

On the 12th of April, 2001, you can help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s historic first manned space flight.

From the Yuri’s Night web site:
“Circling the Earth in the orbital spaceship I marveled at the beauty of our planet.
People of the world! Let us safeguard and enhance this beauty – not destroy it!” – Yuri Gagarin

On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first human to enter space. As we approach the fortieth anniversary of this momentous occasion we look to the past to honor the forefathers of space and we look to the future of humankind in space.

Yuri’s Night is a celebration of space being held on April 12, 2001. We ask everyone to assert their belief in the possibilities of space by joining people around the world to celebrate space on this one night of the year.

The Altenklingen Foundation has made a significant donation to our cause. Special thanks to the Space Frontier Foundation for helping us manage the new funds, and to ISU alum George Weinmann for making the connection.

Join the party!
