Los Angeles, CA, October 15, 2001 – On Thursday, November 15th, CNN’s Larry King will emcee the Arthur C. Clarke 2001 Gala in Los Angeles. The 2001 Gala will honor Sir Arthur, eminent scientist and author of “2001, A Space Odyssey” before the year 2001 comes to an end. The SCI FI Channel and United Financial of Illinois, Inc. are the presenting sponsors of the event hosted by The Space Frontier Foundation and produced by Diamond Sky.
After the tragic events of September 11th, the Space Frontier Foundation’s Rick Tumlinson, contacted Sir Arthur to ask his opinion about proceeding with the Gala on November 15, while Executive Producer Frank Braun contacted Co-chairs Larry King and Tom Hanks with the same question. The answer – a resounding affirmation to move forward. Tumlinson expounded upon that sentiment by affirming that “in light of the recent tragic events, we believe it is more important than ever to give our children and those of the world, ‘permission to dream’”. Both the Space Frontier Foundation and Diamond Sky have announced that 10% of the Gala’s proceeds will be given to the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund.
Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman will be the featured speaker, reading a passage from “Rendezvous with Rama,” one of the many science fiction novels written by Sir Arthur.
Diamond Sky Inc. CEO Frank Braun pointed out that leaders from the space and aeronautics community, as well as the entertainment industry continue to call with a desire to play a role in honoring Sir Arthur’s devotion to exploration and education. This list includes director James Cameron, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 13 Screenwriter Al Reinert, first space tourist Dennis Tito, and others.
The gala will be held at the Playboy Mansion promises to be an exquisite production reflecting the theme that now, more than ever, America needs permission to dream! As always, guests will be able to enjoy strolls through the beautiful grounds in Holmby Hills along with first class food and service. For the first time in the Mansion’s history an extraordinary Space Exhibit that will stretch the imagination of every guest will enhance the grounds. As a tribute to 2001 A Space Odyssey, the Monolith will appear on the Mansion’s grounds. Magically, the ape-like ancestors of mankind, will re-emerge from their primal place in history. Guests will be encouraged to gaze at the stars through telescopes with volunteers as their guides.
Plans call for a satellite feed to allow Sir Arthur C. Clarke to address the Gala guests, live from Sri Lanka. The celebrity co-chairs will also contribute to a show that will reflect the central themes in Sir Arthur’s work, from the assembly of Space Station Alpha, to the first forays into space by Citizen explorers, entering an era of international cooperation and opportunity on the high Frontier. The Gala will inspire everybody to grasp the grandeur, beauty and drama of humanity’s movement outward to the stars.
The Space Frontier Foundation is an organization of space activists, scientists and engineers, media and political professionals, entrepreneurs and citizens from all backgrounds and nations whose central goals are the expansion of life beyond the Earth and the permanent settlement of space.
