Tumlinson to Testify on Bush Space Policy at Senate Hearing

January 26, 2004 Press Releases

Washington, D.C., January 26, 2004 – Space Frontier Foundation co-founder Rick Tumlinson will testify Wednesday January 28, before the Senate Full Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Chaired by Sen. John McCain, the hearing will take place at 9:30 am in Room SR 253 of the Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C.

The purpose of the hearing is to hear testimony on plans for future space exploration by NASA. The hearing will focus on President Bush’s recent proposal to return astronauts to the Moon and expand human space exploration to Mars.

Tumlinson said he will sound a note of caution and warning at the hearing. “We believe the president is sincere in what he is proposing. We believe that returning to the Moon is the right thing to do. But we don’t believe that NASA as currently constituted can pull it off. Only a re-focused NASA with serious input and partnership with the private sector will allow this vision to be realized. I will tell the committee how it should happen,” he said.
