Record Number of Attendees Take Part in Supporting the Future of NewSpace
Silicon Valley, CA – The Space Frontier Foundation’s NewSpace 2011 Conference saw new levels of participation from around the space industry. New partnerships and plans to further the expanding NewSpace industry formed between NASA, commercial space leaders, advocates, and companies. Lively debate took place during panels, leading to new ideas to spark the commercial industry. With record smashing attendance numbers, exciting new speakers, and an overflowing exhibitor hall, this year’s conference was a true success.
The conference impacted people far beyond the NASA Ames conference hall. Over 7,000 unique viewers tuned in online to watch the panels and even sent in questions. Video of the conference panels is now available online on SpaceVidcast’s YouTube channel for those that missed seeing part or all of it live. Photos of the conference can be viewed on the Foundation’s Flickr site.
The keynote speech by Lori Garver, NASA Deputy Administrator, was certainly a highlight of the conference and a great way to kick of the three-day event. Watch video of her speech online and hear what’s being done to promote favorable commercial space policy within NASA. There was standing room only for many of the panels and topics ranged from international markets to supporting NewSpace in the US to futuristic concepts. The NewSpace Business Plan Competition revealed many bright new stars of commercial space and the $25,000 prize went to Altius Space Machines.
In the evening, around 150 people, many from outside the conference, attended the NewSpace Tweetup at the Hacker Dojo to mingle and discuss how to encourage the intrepid hacker culture to get involved in NewSpace. Finally, the NewSpace Awards Gala was particularly festive this year with awards being presented to NanoRacks, John Ringo, Yuri’s Night, Altius Space Machines, Rand Simberg, InSpace Media, and the chairs of the conference, Ryan McLinko and James Pura.
